Rising from an emergency meeting of the National working Committee on Wednesday, 11th of April, 2018 in Asaba Delta State, The United Nigeria group (TUNG), being a pro unity group that has expressed concern over the situation of our country viz a vis the divisions that exist today and the continued weakening of the bonds that keep us together, wish to state the following in response to the revelation by President Muhammadu Buhari of his intention to contest the next Presidential election.
1. The group, which believes strongly that fairness breeds unity, peace and progress and the lack of it being responsible for most of our present situation, despite agreeing that the president has right to contest the next election as provided for by the constitution is dismayed at the President’s declaration of interest.
2. The group had hoped that the president will realize that the best way he could contribute to repairing a very damaged situation will be to leave the stage at the end of this tenure so that the country can truly begin to make serious efforts at strengthening the bonds that bind us together and put the nation on a true path of progress.
3. That the president does not have any moral justification to seek re-election having failed to deliver on all his pre-electoral promises.
4. The group observed that the present administration headed by the president by actions and inactions has continued to weaken the strength of our bonds and call on all well meaning Nigerians to dish primordial sentiments at this point in the life of our nation and see to it that this administration is well retired by the end of this tenure (2019).
5. All hands irrespective of party, region or religion must therefore be on deck toward the election of a probable individual with germane qualities required to steady the wrecking ship that the present administration is most likely leaving behind. Such qualities must include and not restricted to the individual’s ability to see and appreciate the complexity of nation building, how it affects our coexistence as a people and the need to change the way we are governed politically (form/structure).
6. In light of the above, the group wishes to reaffirm our support for an Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy and eventually his presidency. Considering the above required attributes, it is easy to discern that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar being a detribalized Nigerian is the right size as president of Nigeria for a trying time such as we are in now.
The group once again wish to state unequivocally that it will continue to work assiduously in collaboration with all well meaning Nigerians, towards the actualization of the above.
7. We thank all Nigerians especially past leaders both in private and public arena that have summoned the courage to speak against the ills of this government. We ask that their words be matched with action as the election approaches, for time may be running out on Nigeria
