MSF CURES 68 CHILDREN WITH TUBERCULOSIS FOR FREE IN BORNO

The Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has yesterday said that 68 children with tuberculosis in Borno state, have been treated free of charge in the last six months. Doctors without Borders, Medical Officer, Dr. Mohammed Abdullahi disclosed this on Monday to mark this year’s World Tuberculosis Day (WTD) in Maiduguri, the state capital. According to him, the children were treated at MSF’s medical facility in Fori Community of Maiduguri metropolis. Abdullahi also explained that most of the patients had completed their treatment for tuberculosis. “26 of the children had completed their first two months of intensive therapy, while 42 patients are on regular follow up to complete their treatment,” he said. On children’s full treatment, he said: “They had gone through two phases of treatment, which comprise intensive therapy and regular follow up to prevent any relapse of the disease.” The six months’ treatment; including clinical examinations, drugs and counselling were provided free of charge.” He also warned: “Patients were sensitised on the need to adhere to prescription, to enhance compliance and cure the disease. According to him, tuberculosis is curable and is also related to malnourishment. He said there is need for those on treatment to eat well. He listed the symptoms of disease to include prolong coughing, night sweat and weight loss. “Parents and care givers are advised to present their children for BCG vaccination and avoid staying or sleeping in congested areas or rooms,” he advised.
