Troops Repell ISWAP Attacks

Troops of the 3 Battalion and 22 Task Force Brigade of the Nigerian Army have repelled the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attacks on Gambouru/Ngala in Borno state.

Gambouru/Ngala, a border community with Cameroon was severely attacked by Boko Haram insurgents between 2014 and 2016 with the loss of many lives and property.

A counter-insurgency expert, in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, disclosed, yesterday (Wednesday), in Maiduguri, that; “On Wednesday, February 22, 2023 the soldiers overwhelmed the terrorists with superior firepower,” stating that the insurgents were in disarray with gunshot wounds.

On how the border community was protected, he said that as the terrorists advanced towards Gambouru from various locations, they attempted to penetrate into the residential areas of the border community.

A military source in Maiduguri, also added: “The troops of 3 Battalion, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) had successfully repelled the ISWAP attack on Gambouru/Ngala in the early hours of Wednesday.”

The source noted that some of the terrorists were neutralized, during an encounter when other members of the terror group fled, following the superior firepower of the troops.

Meanwhile, the ISWAP in a recent broadcast had promised to launch attacks, so as to scuttle the Saturday general elections in the country.

The military high command in the state, led by Maj-Gen. Ibrahim Ali also reiterated its commitments to provide security at the February 25, 2023 Presidential and National Assembly elections.
