The Borno state government has ordered the closure of Kashim Ibrahim College of Education, Maiduguri, and Umar Ibn Ibrahim El Kanemi College of Science and Technology Bama for two weeks. The shut of colleges was over the clashes of students over the issues of hostel accommodation in Maiduguri metropolis. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Mohammed Abatcha, in a statement Thursday in Maiduguri disclosed: “This decision was to avoid escalation of clashes among the rampaging yesterday morning in Maiduguri. Continuing, he added: “As a result of reported cases of clashes between students of Kashim Ibrahim College of Education, Maiduguri and Umar Ibn Ibrahim El-Elkanemi College of Education, Science and Technology, Bama on May 27, 2021, over the issue of hostel accommodation, the Ministry of Higher Education in consultation with the management of the two colleges has decided to close the institutions for two weeks. He said the decision has become necessary to prevent further escalation of the clashes and to save lives and properties pending further investigation of the root cause of the matter, The state government relocated the Umar Ibn Ibrahim El-Kanemi College of Education Science and Technology, Bama, to Maiduguri to share accommodation and other structures with Kashim Ibrahim College of Education.
