NASU SEEKS INTERVENTION OF LAGOS ASSEMBLY OVER DISCRIMINATORY POLICY IN THE HARMONIZED RETIREMENT AGE FOR TEACHERS IN NIGERIA BILL, 2021

Date:

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU on Tuesday sought the intervention of the Lagos State House of Assembly over the discriminatory policy in exclusion of non-teaching staff in primary and secondary schools into the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Bill, 2021. The Bill is expected to be transmitted to the National Assembly, NASS for enactment into law in order to guarantee better welfare packages for teachers in terms of retirement and also extend their retirement age to 65 years and length of service to 40 years. It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari during the Teachers Day celebration in 2020 announced new incentives for teachers in public basic and secondary schools in Nigeria. The Secretary of NASU, Lagos Chapter, Comrade Adetunji Ademisoye who led his colleagues to a peaceful protest to the State Assembly noted that teachers are not the only workers in the school system as there are sizeable numbers of non-teaching staff who complement the work of teachers and failure to approve same incentives for non-teaching staff will dampen the morale and affect the overall productivity in the school system.

“We wrote to various authorities involved in the Bill but it was approved by Federal Executive Council, FEC without any of them realising that teaching staff and non-teaching staff are synonymous and if this Bill is passed by NASS, it will be rubber stamped and approved. We cannot wait until this happens before we act, that is why we are embarking on a 3-day strike in the whole federation to express this injustice.” He expressed. He thereafter appealed to the House to support their plight to enable an all-inclusive consideration of the non-teaching staff to enjoy these benefits and incentives as majority of them are Masters and PhD holders. Responding, the Acting Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko commended their peaceful conduct of expression, adding that “You might be aware that the House is on recess but once you submit your petition to the House; be rest assured that the House will work on it and get back to NASU.” He further urged them to maintain their peaceful conduct as their message has been heard loud and clear by the House. “We will extend to the leadership of the House your peaceful agitations.”
