Buni Empowers 890 Yobe Women With Hybrid Goats

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe state, has engaged 890 women with the distribution of 1,780 goats to restore means of livelihoods in insurgency affected councils. The targeted women were selected five from each of the 178 electoral wards with a pair of a male and female hybrid goats. While distributing the hybrid goats Tuesday at Buni/Yadi, he disclosed that the empowerment programme was to provide IDP returnees with sustainable means of livelihoods. “There cannot be any meaningful development if this segment of our population is neglected,” he noted. According to him, the hybrid goats’ distribution exercise underscores the government’s strategic approach to economic empowerment of women. “They are also good managers of economic resources to promote self—reliance,” he said, noting that the empowerment of women will support effort towards recovery of their lost means of livelihoods. He therefore assured that his administration will continue to support women and vulnerable persons to become self-reliant. He said that the socio-economic reliance; should also be dignified sustaining their means of livelihoods. Continued; he added: “To achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs), this administration has engaged a holistic approach to the fight against poverty and unemployment targeting women, youths and the vulnerable. He said the administration also declared a state of emergency on Primary and Basic Education to lay a solid educational foundation. According to him, the state’s education system; was to improve the level of literacy in the state. “We will continue to seek collaboration with development partners and other stakeholders to improve the lives of people,” he said. Speaking of the high breeding goats; he said: “There is high innate abilities of distributed goats to reproduce and multiply within a short period of time. “We are therefore expecting to see every beneficiary of this programme becoming a proud owner of herds of goats in a few years,” he said. While commending the Governor, Women Affairs Commissioner, Hauwa Bah Abubakar, said that the Buni administration has implemented policies to empower more women. “This is a win-win policy that has benefited not only women, but the entire society,” she said, noting that women empowerment is one of the most powerful means of women achieve socioeconomic development. According to her, it will also afford women withstand the shocks of ongoing economic recession and poverty caused by decade long insurgency and coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
