AIG to engage 1,350 Borno community police constables

Date:

The Assistant Inspector of General of Police (AIG), Lawan Ado is to
engage 1,350 community police constables in 27 councils of Borno.
The engagement of community constables, is voluntary and based on
community intelligence gathering to detect and prevent any criminal
activities in councils.
Ado disclosed this at the weekend on Peace FM programme of Radio
Nigeria monitored in Maiduguri, the state capital.
He said that to effectively implement community policing, 50 community
police constables, are to be recruited in each of the councils in the
state.
He however, noted that participation of constables, is voluntary and
their remunerations is also optional to protect and lives and property
in communities.
On qualifications of constables, he said: “A community police
constable should be employable and have means of living and belong to
a recognized association.
“He or she should not belong to any political party at the state or
council level,” adding that the community policing constables be
within the age brake of 21 and 50 years.
He said as community policing a voluntary service to protect lives and
property, the councils may wish to pay honorariums if they could
afford.
He said that the Police is moving towards proactive protection of
people’s lives and property, instead of reactive processes of
intelligence gathering and sharing.
