Police inaugurates community policing in Borno

The Borno state Police Command, has inaugurated community policing
committee to check crimes at the grassroots and community levels.
The committee, comprises members of Civilian JTF and Civil Society,
vigilante groups will also work closely with community traditional
rulers.
While inaugurating committee members Monday in Maiduguri, the
Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for zone 15, Lawal Ado
disclosed that community policing will reduce crimes with intelligence
gathering in communities,
Yesterday’s inauguration, was kicked off with the release of N13.3
billion by the President, Muhammad Buhari last week.
According to him, community policing will reduce crime right from the
grassroots and into communities of state.
He noted that the engagement of traditional rulers, was to identify
the bad eggs in society at micro levels of each and every community.
“Community policing is the new global way of combating crime in
society,” he declared, adding that it has become the best global trend
of combatting crimes in society.
He added that apart from the involvement of conventional local
security outfits, local women, traders, and community leaders too must
buy into the new approach of crime prevention.
Continued; “The idea of community policing is to prevent crimes at
grassroots level.  “This is going to be intelligence-driven.
“It is about a partnership with the community and collaboration with
members of the society.
“This will provided means of reducing crime and bringing about a new
trend in policing to protect people’s and property.”
Chairman of Borno Police Community Relations Committee, Alhaji Sanda
Sheriff, said the inauguration of the committee was a milestone in the
police-community relations in the state.
“This will bring relief to us and engender better cooperation between
the police and members of the society,” he said, noting that in the
past, there has been distrust between the two.
He said with the inauguration of community policing committee, it will
bring about trust and cooperation.
“Our job as a Committee is to go into society and select trusted and
reliable people that will work as community police,” he said.
The State Police Commissioner, Mohammed Aliyu, disclosed that only 50
volunteers will be selected from the 27 councils to begin community
policing.
