LAGOS ASSEMBLY CALLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY ON THREE STATE HELICOPTERS

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Obasa has called on the Office of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Commissioner on Budget and Economic Planning, Ministry of Special Duties, Lagos State Security Trust Fund, LSSTF and relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies to account for the procurement of three helicopters purchased by Lagos State Security Trust Fund, LSSTF.

Hon. (Mrs.) Mojisola Meranda raised this observation, under matter of urgent public importance during Plenary on Monday, that the contractual agreement signed by the Lagos State Government and the entity entrusted to maintain the usage of the assets needs be looked into, “The entities in charge of these assets, should be written to as to why there is no revenue coming into the coffers of the State and there is a line that pays for the maintenance of these assets.”

The helicopters were purchased during the regime of former governors, Babatunde Raji Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode, necessitated to serve dual purposes of security and revenue.

The Speaker, however, directed the Clerk of the House, Mr. Azeez Sanni to write to all relevant Offices and MDAs to give an account on the procurement and maintenance of the three helicopters.

In another development, the Animal Bill, 2020 scaled through its second reading on the floor of the House.

The Bill is for a Law to regulate the ownership, licensing, care, and sales of pets and prohibit or restrict persons from having custody of animals dangerous to the public and where permitted, to license, control and regulate the custody of such animals and for other connected purposes’

The Bill was therefore committed to the House Committee on Agriculture chaired by Hon. Kehinde Joseph to report back in two weeks.
