Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state; has targeted 6,000 vulnerable
residents for the distribution of COVID-19 palliatives in three wards
of Maiduguri metropolis.
Yesterday’s distribution was effected, after the Governor flagged off
distribution of palliatives last week at Customs House IDP camp.
“Today’s (Saturday) distribution of food items are for the vulnerable
groups living in Gwange I, II and III,” he said, disclosing that these
targeted wards are highly populated with residents living below the
poverty line.
He said they will collect a variety of food items through a statewide
palliative launched last week at Customs House IDP camp.
He said in Gwange III of metropolis, 2,000 residents were reached with
assorted food items, including condiments and seasonings for good
tastes.
According to him, similar food items are also to be distributed to
other wards of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere.
While constituting a 17-member food distribution committee on April
24, he said: “The distribution of palliatives is to cushion social
effects of 14- lockdown of Borno state.
“The April 22, 2020 lockdown, was to control the spread of coronavirus
(COVID-19),” noting that the people should continue to maintain
physical distancing, hand washing with soap and strict adherence to
personal hygiene.
He charged the COVID-19 palliative distribution committee; led by
Bukar Talba, the Commissioner of Agriculture to be transparent in
identifying vulnerable groups of people.
“You should not distribute COVID-19 palliatives to people who are not
in need of these food items,” he warned.
To enhance transparency, the governor included representatives of
intelligence and security agencies, religious affairs, women and the
media.
