BOKO HARAM: DISPLACED EMIR RETURNS TO THRONE 5 YEARS AFTER

Date:

Jutha Gupah, Maiduguri

The emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Muhammadu Idrissa Timta, has returned to his chiefdom, five years after being displaced by Boko Haram; and fled to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. Gwoza, was attacked and captured by insurgents on August 14, 2014 and converted the emir’s palace into a caliphate. Timta’s return to his place on Sunday brings to three numbers of monarchs that have relocated from Maiduguri to their respective chiefdom. The emirs of Uba and Askira in Southern Borno state have already returned late last year. Timta, in an interview Sunday in Gwoza, disclosed that even though insurgents killed his father, Shehu Idriss Timta on May 30, 2014, they should lay down their arms. “The insurgents’ laying of arms, could be implemented through Nigerian Army’s safe corridors, deradicalisation and integration into society,” he said. He urged the military and other security agencies to provide security in the fringes of township, including the flushing out of insurgents from Mandara Hills, east of Gwoza. He also called on the people to return home and rebuild the destroyed community to restore their livelihoods. He appealed to state government to provide temporary shelter for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) return from Gombe, Nasarawa states and Abuja to Gwoza. The monarch, who was excited of his return, said: “Today is my happiest day, as I officially returned to my chiefdom of Gwoza. The Deputy Governor, Umar Kadafur, who accompanied the emir to Gwoza, said: “Government is not unaware of the challenges related to relocation and return of emirs. “The emirs of Dikwa and Bama, are yet to return to their respective chiefdom.” “We’re going to accelerate the reconstruction and rehabilitation of hospital, water supply and public buildings,” he said
