UNIFORM ALLOWANCE PAYMENTS NOT TO INDUCE SOLDIERS IN 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS

Date:

The Nigerian Army has said that the “uniform payments of allowances” to soldiers are not any form of inducements to favour certain interests in the 2019 general elections. Spokesman of Army, Brig-Gen. Sani Usman in a statement released Thursday in Maiduguri disclosed that the payment of allowances is meant for uniform upkeep and maintenance allowance for all Army personnel. According to him, “The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to some insinuations on various social media platforms that the recent payment of uniform allowance to officers and soldiers was done to sway their voting towards a particular political party.” He said that this is not true. He explained that: “The payment of uniform allowance commenced in 2016 to assist troops deployed on Operation Lafiya Dole as uniform upkeep and maintenance in the front lines of Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad Region. “The allowance was however extended to all Nigerian Army personnel because of their increasing engagement in various internal security operations across the country.” He further disclosed that 95 per cent of Nigerian Army troops will be engaged in security duties during the forthcoming general elections. He added that about 40 per cent troops are in the North East fighting Boko Haram insurgency in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states. He said it is therefore; grossly unfair and sheer mischief to associate the Army with such mundane action. He urged the people to dissociate themselves from such fake and unwarranted information calculated to smear the Army. “Although investigation is ongoing to ascertain the source of such malicious allegations, we would like to warn unpatriotic individuals to stop this mischief forthwith,” he said. While warning soldiers, he said: “We warn all officers and soldiers to desist from acts that are inimical to Service discipline and code of conduct and reiterate Chief of Army Staff’s warning during his conference with General Officers Commanding and Operations Commanders.” According to him, all Army personnel must remain neutral, non-partisan and transparent in all their actions before, during and after this year’s elections. “I need to reiterate that there will be zero-tolerance for any action and in-action by commanders at all levels that is deemed tilted towards giving undue advantage to any candidate, political party, ethnic or religious leanings to the detriment of the unity and integrity of Nigeria,” he further warned.
