UNIMAID GRADUATES 78 STUDENTS WITH FIRST CLASS DEGREE HONOURS

The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has yesterday graduated over 17,800 students with 78 graduates bagging a first class degree honours from various Faculties and Departments of the varsity. The Vice Chancellor of UNIMAID, Prof. Ibrahim Njodi  disclosed this at the 23rd combined convocation ceremony held in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. He said 3,527 students were graduated in the post-graduate school programmes, adding that  56 students bagged PhD degrees. According to him, 570 graduates bagged the Master degrees; while 2,901 others received post-graduate Diploma certificates. His words: “A total of 8,643 were for undergraduate degrees, out of which 7,278 studied under regular programmes, 573 from affiliated colleges and 714 on distance learning programmes. “About 5,725 students were conferred with diploma certificates while 1,597 received Diploma certificates through the University’s Consultancy Services and 4,128 got Diplomas from affiliated colleges.” He said the Governing Council of the University has also approved the immediate appointments of three Emeriti Professors. He added that the appointees were first admitted into the Northeast College of Arts and Science (NECAS), Maiduguri in 1974, The emeriti Professors include Abdulhamid Abubakar, John Akinyili and Joseph Alumona. Prof. Njodi said that the trio emeriti had rendered over 40 years of academic and non-academic services to the varsity. According to him, their appointments were in recognition of their intellectual excellence, exemplary characters and dedication to service to both humanity and the University. Prof. Biodun Adesanya, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Board of UNIMAID, also appealed to the Federal Government to provide special consideration to the University, because of the security challenges of running a varsity in the Northeast. “This University also requires the full support of corporate bodies and philanthropic individuals to enable it overcome the challenges posed by inadequate funding,” appealed Prof. Adesanya yesterday at the convocation ceremony.
