West African neighbor Ghana thrashed the home based Super Eagles by 4-1 to lift the West African Football Union Cup 2017. The host nation who had initially lost 2-0 to Nigeria in the group stages, seem to have learnt from that defeat and capitalized on the weaknesses of the Eagles on Sunday.

The Super Eagles before the final were yet to concede goals throughout the competition, which was a plus for the Nigerian side and was one of the reasons pundits and Nigerian fans, were optimistic in the team winning the title on Sunday.

However, that was not to be as the Ghanaians put four goals into the net on Sunday, two of which were spot kicks. Stephen Sarfowho was the man of the match scored twice for the host nation, while compatriots Atinga and Cobbinah scored a goal apiece, while Nigeria’s Rabiu Ali scored the consolation for Nigeria via a commendable free kick.

While, Niger on the other hand defeated Benin Republic in the third place match on Saturday 2-1 to cement their place as the third best team in the West African region. Goals from Halidou Garba Idrissa and Adje Adebayor ensured the Nigerien win though Nabil Yarou put one back for the Beninese but it did little for the team.

Nigeria’s Coach Salisu Yusuf who had before the final expressed his fears that defeating Ghana for the second time in the same competition would not be easy, has called the defeat a good lesson for the home based Eagles, and a deserving win for the host nation because they made good use of their chances.

Captain of the Nigerian side and Super Eagles Goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa was awarded the Golden Glove of the competition for keeping four clean sheets;others awarded are Ghana’s Stephen Sarfo the top scorer of the tournament with 4 goals. While the most valuable player was Ghana’s Twum Isaac.

The next focus for the squad would be the CHAN 2018 competition, which would take place in Kenya. One major headache for the coach would be the availability of the squad, as we know some of the players are already been scouted by foreign league side and might not be available by then. It is imperative the coach to start preparations against that tournament from now to be better prepared.
